Semi­nar ‚Digi­tal Design and Full Scale Fabri­ca­tion’ (Dig Des Fab) is taught at Univer­sity of Applied Arts in Vienna, Insti­tute of Archi­tec­ture, Depart­ment of Struc­tu­ral Design during Winter Semes­ter 2019/2020.

This work­shop explo­res the appli­ca­tion of con­tem­porary digi­tal design and fabri­ca­ti­on me­thods using 3D concrete prin­ting tech­no­logy. Student groups de­signed para­metric infill struc­tures based on the non-planar slicing logic. The design process ­was evalua­ted by virtual analy­sis method­s using struc­tu­ral soft­ware plugin Karamba. Exter­nal specia­lists ­from Incremental3D pro­vided in-depth fabri­ca­tion exper­tise during the produc­tion phase. Special empha­sis was put on the success­ful inter­ac­tion of digi­tal design and pro­duc­tion tech­no­logy, prima­rily in archi­tec­tu­ral­ de­tail­ing explo­i­t­ing the perks of addi­tive manu­fac­tu­ring. Diffe­rent mate­ri­als, depo­si­tion stra­te­gies and aesthe­tic quali­ties were rese­ar­ched, discus­sed and applied during the course of this seminar.
